Show written and performed by MayaChandini

«In the music room of the Maharaja, the master gives his lesson of music and dance. The Maharani decides then to make us relive a surprising part of her childhood. Princesses, dancers, troubadours, monsters and magicians pull us into an adventure full of emotions and suspense, inviting the audience to become the heros of the story. »

This show for children from 7 to 14 years old is meant for a family or school audience. It is an interactive tale full of humor where Maya and Chandini ravish us into the heart of Indian culture.

Indian dance and music, the power and wisdom and humor of the spiritual masters, their way to pass on the cultural richness of the « small » and « grand » castes as well as the cohabitation between Hindus and Muslims are the major themes of the show.

On other levels, it approaches the hold of parental protection, the power of friendship, self-confidence and self-realization, turning this story into an initiatory tale.

Privileging interaction, the narrator invites some children to step on stage while making the rest of the audience participate, to live this journey in a playful and educational way. It’s best not to reveal this interaction to the children before the show !

There is one version with the musicians of Amrat Hussain Gypsy Trio and another one in duo.

  • Abstract:
The curtain opens on a court dance.
Maya, queen of Jaipur, makes us relive a surprising part of her childhood and projects us into the heart of a Mughal palace.
Amrat Hussain, the music and dance master, in the company of his musicians, teaches his art and helps the children discover the instruments, the music and the dances of Rajasthan.
During the performance, Maya chooses two children (princess and wizard) to mime on stage the story she’s here to tell.
Going backward in time, she draws us into the action-packed adventure of her lady’s companion, Chandini.
Enamored by the Prince Firouz Shah, Chandini is desperate not to be able to seduce him because she is so petite (puppet). Then the princess takes her to see a great sadhu, a wise wizard, who gives her a potion to grow.
Unfortunately, the spell is too powerful and she turns into a giant (stilts).
The little Maya, furious, goes back to the sadhu who then reveals her the secret of Chandini, the Princess Clair-de-Lune (the Moonlight Princess).
